I wrote earlier in the year about trying to get my movie backlog under something approaching control. I am happy to report that I am in fact making progress. It's not a slam dunk, but I think I can confidently say I will get it under 100 unwatched movies by the end of the year. I got it down to under 150 this week, so getting another 50 knocked off seems doable, as long as I make it my focus for movie watching.

But thinking about my movie backlog also got me thinking about my even bigger backlog, which is my TV backlog. I haven't really put it into a format that would give me an understanding of how big it is, but I know there are some behemoths in there. I have the entire Law & Order original series run, which is in the neighborhood of 400 episodes, plus a few seasons each of Special Victims Unit and Criminal Intent (my personal favorite L&) franchise) I've also collected the entire run of all 10 Smallville seasons, despite only seeing the first few. And another daunting one, is Mystery Science Theater 3000. A few years ago I backed one of their kickstarters at the level that got me access to every movie they had ever riffed and still had the rights to distribute.

But I made the list, at least a first pass, and having a list is the first step to completing a list. It gives me a sense of purpose and direction when I'm trying to decide what to watch. The first pass is also the worse pass, because I went just off the unwatched episode counts in my plex server, which is over-counting by a fair margin on some shows. For example it includes almost all the episodes of the X-Files and Star Trek The Next Generation, which I actually have watched plenty of, but I watched it on the actual DVDs and so haven't gone back into plex and marked those watched. I'll probably do that as time permits. I thought about putting the list into Serialized, which is a website similar to letterboxd which allows for tracking TV watched (and which I use) but I haven't really figured out their lists yet and it was easier to type up a google sheet on my phone than to try and figure out a whole new UI system. I think I'll probably try to get the smaller/shorter shows off it first, to just get the total number of series down (currently at 73) which will of course dial up the average episode counts (I put the mean, median, mode and Range all on the sheet too, since I learned those in elementary school and it's nice to have an excuse to use them) but I'm more concerned with totals than averages on this one.

If you want to see it, I think I managed to make it visible here: TV Show Backlog and I make no promises on keeping it updated, but I hope to at least check it occasionally.
